IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Daenerys Targaryen
Canon: Game of Thrones
Canon Point: end of series (post-s8)
Background: Wiki

Suitability:
Daenerys is no stranger to war, conflict, and assuming the mantle of a monarchial leader; in fact, her entire character arc in
Game of Thrones is about her quest for her family's birthright, the seat of the Iron Throne of Westeros, which she believes to be hers because for nearly the entire series she's convinced she's the last Targaryen. As a result of this belief, her quest for the throne entirely shapes her character's development. Whereas she starts out as a young girl sold into marriage and fearful of her abusive older brother, she emerges a queen in the truest sense of the word by the time she sails to Westeros and arrives on its shores. Along the way she's amassed an army, freed slaves and slaughtered many of their former owners, and trampled the Essene slave trade to dust under her sandals. It hasn't been overly difficult, given her army and the strength of her forces, and her three dragon hatchlings that grow stronger and bigger each season, but it has demanded she make some difficult choices. For the most part it's hard to say someone would have acted differently, in her role; it's only when she gets to Westeros that things get truly mired in political issues, and while in the beginning Daenerys moderates her actions with information from her advisors and keeps her dragon's temper in check, that doesn't last forever.
That said, being a conqueror is literally in Dany's blood, and she will no doubt have quite an interest in the game's plot and machinations for that reason alone. She'll be less concerned about 'going home', having just been murdered immediately before arriving in Thorne, and more concerned with retrieving at least one of her dragon children and forming a position of strength within the setting. She won't be content, given her nature, with being subservient to someone else's authority for very long, and she's shown she'll enact whatever means necessary to achieve her goals. In this game, I hope to explore her personality post-series end, though, and potentially find that spark of mercy and protectiveness she once had that led her to free slaves and safeguard children, juxtaposing that with her later persona of ruthless conqueror. The dichotomy is intriguing and I'd love to see where it goes!

Powers:
Unburnt. Canonically her single superhuman power is that of being completely resistant to fire, no matter how hot or intense the inferno. She stepped into her husband Drogo's funeral pyre, and emerged unscathed; similarly in season 6, she set Vaes Dothrak ablaze, burning the Khals inside, and again emerged completely untouched by it.
Mother of Dragons. While not actually a canon power, Daenerys is the adoptive mother to three dragons, having hatched their eggs herself while on Drogo's funeral pyre. All 3 dragons (only one left alive, by the end of the series) are closely bonded to her; they're extremely protective of her, respond to only her commands, and seem to have an emotional/intuitive connection to her as well. I list this under the powers/abilities section, because, well - it's like having a pet nuclear bomb, really.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
There have many moments in her life that have shaped Daenerys. The first example we see is that of her marriage to Khal Drogo, where she endears herself to the Dothraki horselord and becomes more confident and assured as
Khaleesi, the revered wife of the khal. She is empowered by each slaver city she frees the inhabitants of, from the Unsullied warriors she frees who become her army, to the Yunkai and Meereenese slaves who praise her for their freedoms. She draws people to her cause like Daario Naharis, a Tyroshi sellsword, who is initially instructed to kill her and ends up killing his co-captains and pledging his loyalty and love to her; and Jon Snow, Westeros’ King in the North, once he sees her equal amounts of ferocity and compassion.

But it's not all hearts and flowers, not by a long shot. Each betrayal she experiences helps shape her as well, in terms of learning and development of power; the betrayal by the Lhazarene priestess, who takes the life of her unborn baby and Drogo's faculties, becomes a driving force in hatching Dany's dragons on a funeral pyre, because Dany has learned that
only death may pay for life. The betrayal in Qarth leads to Dany's forces sacking the city's treasures and acquiring a ship with which to sail to Astapor. The attack on her and her supporters in Meereen, by the dissenters who make up the Sons of the Harpy - noblemen who would sooner see Daenerys leave Essos and allow slave trade to resume - results in Daenerys obliterating several ships in the Yunkish fleet who come to attack her, with dragonfire. With each test she encounters she emerges stronger for having been challenged, at least until she gets to Westeros.

In Westeros, it all falls apart. She claims momentary victory over the Lannister army during one decisive battle, but loses one of her dragon children when she goes further north and flies to the Wall to rescue Jon Snow, and encounters the Night King and his White Walkers. Joining her forces with the Northerners enables them to defeat the Night King's advance into Winterfell and ends the threat of the Long Night, but she loses her beloved advisor Jorah in the process, and Missandei and another dragon shortly after. By the time she is ready to invade King's Landing to deal with Cersei, she has lost everyone close to her - including Jon, with the shocking reveal to all of them that he is actually her brother's son and therefore their relationship is incestuous - and she flies into battle on the back of her one remaining dragon child, to obliterate the Lannister forces to victory. Her anger tips the scales though, and in a fit of rage rather than letting the survivors surrender, she demolishes the city entirely with fire and blood.

This ending is tragic for a character that started out so merciful and championing the weak and innocent, but it's obvious by this point that Daenerys is no longer emotionally fit to rule. She insinuates to Jon Snow that she will liberate the entire world, including his family's territory, by burning everyone in it to create anew because they don't get to choose their fates. Her actions lead to her own downfall, when Jon gets close enough by proclaiming fealty to her before he stabs her in the heart and kills her.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Daenerys makes a point to Jon Snow, when she arrives in Westeros and he meets her, to describe the origin of her strength. She has survived many atrocities - being sold like a broodmare, raped, her unborn child murdered. She's had to euthanize her own husband. She's had several attempts on her life, been the subject of numerous assassination attempts, and was even captured by a Dothraki
khalasar where they no doubt meant to do who knows what to her. She survived each of these things, she tells Jon, by one thing alone - not belief in 'gods', not devotion to any religion, but by her own sheer will and belief in herself. In a sense, this is a best and worst case scenario; she is a leader, a would-be queen, who is not beholden to any theocratic thought, but rules by her own judgement and compassion, and this sounds like the most rational way to be. On the other hand it is a dangerous way to think, because she has basically elevated her own status to be superior to the morals of the 'gods', and while religion can be looked at as a social construct of men, it is a construct of many people creating laws to apply to everyone, not just one person.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Strength and loyalty. Daenerys is forced into marriage with Khal Drogo, but she comes to love him because he is the fiercest khal the horselords have ever seen, as well as fully supportive of Dany's own burgeoning willfulness. She admires Missandei, the young scribe who becomes her personal assistant, advisor and trusted friend, because of the girl's inner strength at having grown up in captivity. She falls for Daario, the flashy sellsword who is boastful but also quick with a blade, and she surrounds herself with Westerosi knights like Barristan and Jorah who are strong not only in battle, but in loyalty. And lastly, she falls in love with Jon Snow, because Jon epitomizes everything about the North that is strong and honorable. One could say that with each relationship she strives to emulate the person's strength and ideals; she demonstrates repeatedly that she wants to be a just ruler, and a fair ruler, and that desire is reinforced by the hearts and minds of the people she surrounds herself with, in her most trusted circle.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Earlier on I would say Daenerys would have wished she were stronger, particularly in the first season when Viserys sells her into marriage with Drogo; she feels helpless in that situation, powerless and under her brother's - and her new husband's - thumb. But as she grows as a leader following Drogo's death, and her dragons grow stronger, that helplessness largely disappears. The only other negative side of herself that Dany seems concerned with as time goes on, is the taint of madness that seems to pervade the Targaryen family history. Viserys was obviously lost to madness, and it ended him; she's made aware by Barristan Selmy and Jorah Mormont's counsel that her father King Aerys went the same route. She knows that "when a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin" is a common saying. Dany makes a concerted effort to listen to her advisors in the beginning, especially upon her arrival in Westeros, to temper her actions; she doesn't want to be the "Queen of Ashes", a phrase first used to caution her by Tyrion Lannister. Sadly though, with the loss of Jorah and Missandei later on in the series, as well as with Jon's turnaround with respect to his affections for her and Tyrion's and Varys' perceived betrayals, her emotional instability spirals down into violence and she ends up falling prey to the very same Targaryen madness she's tried so hard to avoid, by burning the entirety of King's Landing.

What is their sign, and why?
I've given Daenerys the sign of
Judgement, mainly because while it is a sign of leaders, they tend to be 'less concerned with the social good'. Daenerys is a conqueror, which this sign exemplifies in the militaristic sense, as well as someone mesmerizing who inspires people with awe; she just is perhaps too emotional and not rational enough, given her timepoint, for the sign of Emperor.
